Begonia ¡¿ cheimantha (Christmas or Lorraine begonia) ¢¥Emma¢¥ was grown in the fall in a greenhouse under either 0, 30, or 55 percent shade. Leaf chlorosis and necrosis was very seven on plants grow in full sun (471 271 ¥ìmol¡¤m^(-2)¡¤s^(-1)), with slight chlorosis on plants under 30 and 55% shade. Plants treated with paclobutrazol and diniconazole were shorter than untreated plants. However, the leaf damage could be reduced by controlling light intensity rather than by using plant growth retardants. For growing conditions in fall, these studies indicate that B. ¡¿ chiemantha should be grown under reduced light intensities, with excessive height being controlled with paclobutrazol and diniconazole, a triazole-type fungicide.
